Yesterday it was widely reported that Russia had banned Modern Warfare 2 due to the controversial “No Russian” mission near the beginning of the game and that the government had ordered a recall of all copies pending a re-evaluation. Unfortunately those reports, originating from Hellforge via Russian game site got PS3, were quite erroneous.

Activision has today given an update on the matter, clarifying that the console versions haven’t even been released in the country and that the removal of the scene from the PC version of the game was their own decision following “the advice of local counsel.”

“Other countries have formal ratings boards that we regularly work with. However, Russia does not have a formal ratings entity. As a result, we chose to block the scene after seeking the advice of local council,” Activision’s statement reads. “Reports that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been banned in Russia are erroneous. Activision only released a PC version of the game in Russia which went on sale on Tuesday, 10th November.”
